Buying a car seat for your child can be confusing. There are so many sizes, types, styles and brands---how do you choose the one that's right
for you? You should always look at the child's weight, height and age when buying a car seat. Here are a few tips to help you understand the
stages and regulations for children's car seats:
Infants
(newborn to 20lbs/9kg)
rear facing car seat
Toddlers
(20-40lbs/9-18kg)
forward facing car seat with tether strap
Preschool-8 year olds
(40-80lbs/18-36kg)
booster seat
Effective September 1st, 2005, a new car seat law in Ontario will require booster seats for children between 18 kg and 36 kg (40-80 lbs.), with a standing height of less than 145 cm (4'9") or a maximum age of eight years.
always keep children under the age of 13 in the back seat of the car, away from active air bags.
thoroughly read the owner's manual for your car seat to ensure that it is properly installed.
avoid using aftermarket car seat products. They can become projectiles or may have hard or sharp surfaces that can hurt your
child in a collision.
We, at Once Upon A Child, strongly believe in placing safety first. Therefore, we do NOT sell used car seats in our stores. We do, however, carry a wide selection of NEW car seats, ranging from infant rear-facing seats to booster seats. Come into the store nearest you to see the various styles and brands.
Use caution when buying or using a pre-owned child car seat. Buy new, or from someone you know, and check it carefully. Make sure the car seat has all of the following:
instructions and all necessary hardware
not been in a collision
a Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS) sticker
not expired or is not older than 10 years
no discoloured (stress) marks or cracks and the harness is not worn or torn.
